Obama’s Choices: #1 Hillary

Posted on: December 29, 2008

I’m taking my inspiration from how Britain handles an election season. First, it’s only 6 weeks long. Second, the various media get together and concentrated on one issue per day, questioning the candidates in detail about it.

Well, Obama has now chosen 20 people who will be at the top of his administration in various jobs. So, I figured I’d try taking each one in turn and talking about the person and the position. How that person will handle that position, we can guess, but we won’t know until his administration begins (Hey!) about 20 days from now.

So, the first is Hillary Clinton who will be Secretary of State. The job of the Secretary of State is to head the diplomatic corps and be the President’s chief advisor on foreign affairs. He or she conducts negotiations (both treaties and trade deals), handles the granting of passports and other travel  and immigration documents (some changes are needed there),  advises on ambassadorial appointments and acceptances of foreign representatives, and provides information to Americans concerning conditions in other countries. Actually, others do most of this work, of course. Hillary will be the supreme supervisor.

Obviously, she’ll not bring that much experience of her own in terms of actually doing the job, though she has specialized in foreign affairs and defense as a Senator, but she does have wide travel experience and certainly comes with one of the best aids you could ask for, Bill, perhaps for free. And name recognition goes a long long way in diplomatic circles. Hillary and Obama agree on most of the areas a Secretary of State handles. Plus, it’s good experience for a possible future President to have on the CV.

On the other hand, she has quite a crew of enemies, and is not known for her management skills. and there was some question of whether  Bill’s other activities might create a conflict of interest, but those questions seem to have been ironed out.

On the whole, not bad at all.
